Kit

While Kit relieved himself, he thought back to his last birthday. He’d spent his 29th in Paris. The team had rented out the Moulin Rouge, and he had thrown an extravagant costume party. He didn't remember very much of it at all, but the press loved the carefully leaked photos of him and Madonna doing the can-can. He'd also bought himself a dark red Mercedes CLK as a birthday gift.

Bit different this year.

Turning to the glow of the fire, he retraced his steps. Sunny was always after him to share stories from his life, but he didn’t want to. Firstly, because it would all come out that he was Nicky Kitson, and secondly because he was a Virgo, and they were not big sharers.

Kit had a soft spot for astrology and used to check his Starry Susan app first thing every morning.

Sunny, a Capricorn, he thought. I should have guessed!

He thought about Alexis—who was a Leo. If he'd been washed up with her instead of Sunny, it would have been a very different story. Kit was exceedingly pleased with his survival partner and wouldn't have swapped her for anyone.

Starry Susan could have given me a heads-up about being shipwrecked, he’d thought several times during the last couple of weeks. Maybe Mercury was retrograde.

Sitting down, Kit wondered if maybe he should just spill all.

Sunny handed him the booze bottle, and the moment passed.

This is better, just keeping it simple.

“I never got into zodiac stuff,” Sunny was saying “If your birthday is coming up soon, what sign does that make you?”

Kit looked at her with surprise. “I thought everyone checked their horoscope!”

“Not me!” she laughed. “After mixing up astrology and astronomy in a class presentation, I got totally put off—so humiliating!”

“Aww, poor Sunny-bach…”

Sunny flicked him.

“I'm Virgo, the water bearer.”

Kit counted off his zodiac assigned traits on his fingers.

“Organized, a perfectionist, guarded, intense, creative, and completely charming.”

“Organized! Perfectionist! I knew astrology was a crock!” Sunny laughed. “Though, I can agree with guarded.”

Kit mock frowned. “You may not believe in the stars, Sunny, but they believe in you.”

“Oh, come on! Do you really think you are organized? I know I haven’t seen you in action anywhere but here, but…” she grinned at him. “...organized? Really?”

“Hmm, agreed that you might not think I'm particularly a perfectionist or obviously organized, but if you saw my record collection, you’d think again. Alphabetized and by genre too, took me ages.”

“I probably would really like that,” agreed Sunny. “Nothing I like more than an alphabetized system. Do you know some people organize their books by color!”

Kit, who’d recently had his library shelves “Ombréd” by an interior decorator, said nothing. “Anyway, I want to hear more about your acting. Tell me about the best role you’ve ever had. Or tell me about things you’ve acted in—would there be anything I’ve seen?”

After a beat, Kit gave the first tangential answer that popped into his head. “Well, I was once in a play where all the cast had to tango. That was fun.
